What will we learn in 1st grade?
The following skills will be woven into projects and taught through direct instruction. Science and social studies concepts will be explored through our projects.
First Grade Project Workers and Social Thinkers will:
- understand and use the elements of critique: kind, specific, and helpful feedback.
- inquire about the world around them, asking "how?" and "why?" questions.
- share ideas and actively listen to others' ideas.
- work collaboratively with partners and small groups.
- develop their independence and problem solving skills.
- take risks and learn from mistakes (when met with failure, they persevere).
- understand that they are part of a community, that the community has norms, and that every member is valued.

- Ask and answer questions about important details in a story
- Retell stories, including key details
- Show understanding of a text's main idea, topic, lesson or message
- Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story
- Distinguish between and explain differences of fiction and nonfiction texts
- Identify who is telling a story at various points in a text
- Use illustrations and details in a story to describe the characters, setting and events
- Compare and contrast the fiction and nonfiction texts
- Know and use various text features (headings, bold print, table of contents, glossaries etc.) to find key information in a nonfiction text
- Read a variety of genres (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, etc)
- Use multiple strategies to figure out unknown words (i.e. context clues, picture clues, word families).
- Read first grade sight words accurately
- Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension (fluency = read like you talk, and with expression)
First Grade Writers will:
- Write opinion pieces
- Write informative texts (how-to books)
- Write narratives
- Pick a writing topic and stick to that topic
- Organize writing pieces with a beginning, middle, and ending
- Add details to writing to expand on ideas
- Use grade appropriate capitalization and punctuation
- Spell first grade sight words correctly
- Spell unknown words phonetically (based on the sounds they hear in words)
First Grade Mathematicians will:
- Represent and solve addition and subtraction problems
- Understand the relationship between addition and subtraction
- Add and subtract within 20 using various strategies
- Know addition and subtraction facts through 10 automatically
- Count to 120 (by ones, twos, fives and tens)
- Understand place value (ones, tens, and hundreds)
- Compare two two-digit numbers (using greater than, less than, and equal to symbols)
- Measure lengths using rulers and other objects
- Tell and write time in half-hours and hours using analog and digital clocks
- Represent and interpret data found in graphs
- Build and draw shapes and identify their differences
