Homework
Although students will not receive homework packets or reading logs to
complete ... they are expected to do some homework each week!
Students are expected to do the following each week:
1. Reading: Students should interact with books every night, reading on their own or with family members. Talking about their reading is also a really helpful way to sharpen their comprehension and communication skills!
2. Math: Logging in to ST Math for 20 minutes 3-4 times each week will help your child practice skills we are learning at school and reach our goal of 100% completion before the end of the year.
3. Sight Words: Words will be sent home throughout the year for practice, but we will not have spelling tests.... instead, the goal is that students will be able to quickly recognize these words in their reading and use them in their writing. Practicing for about 15 minutes 3-4 times each week will be helpful.

The following are options If you and your child would like additional practice:
* Visit the "For Kids" page for websites that have fun learning games.
* Print is all around us, so don't forget to read and discuss things other than books sometimes! Magazines, comic books, menus, road signs, and food packages are just some of the other types of texts that are great for practicing reading and thinking skills.
* Use flash cards to practice addition/subtraction facts. (1st graders should be fluent in facts through 10)
* Use information from the "Highlights" page about new math concepts we are learning and practice those at home.
* Ask your child to teach you how to play math games we have learned in class.
* Use the 120 Chart to practice counting by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s.
* Play Word Bingo: Make 2 sets of word cards; lay one set out face up in a grid formation and use the other set to call out the words; turn cards face down or cover with a marker as words are called; yell "Bingo" when all words in a row, column, or diagonal are covered.
* Keep a journal of daily thoughts, feelings, activities.
* Write notes to family members.
* Write grocery lists and to-do lists for the family.
Note: Remember... 1st graders are encouraged to write unknown words phonetically (to "stretch out" and
write the sounds they hear), so correct spelling is not important at this stage (unless it is a sight word). For more info on writing, click here.
