Project Work
Projects are an amazing way to encourage authenticity in student work and to enrich their learning about the world around them. They are also a great way to highlight various strengths students may have - academic, creative, or interpersonal!
We believe that the primary grades lay the foundation for a very rich, project based learning environment.
With that in mind, we will help first graders develop their ability to:
*use elements of critique to improve their work (give each other kind, specific, and helpful feedback)
*inquire about the world around them/explore curiosities
*share ideas and actively listen to others
*work collaboratively with partners and small groups
*build their independence and problem solving skills
*grow their confidence
*understand that they are part of a community, that communities have norms and
expectations, and that each member is valued.
*Take risks! Learn from mistakes! Meet failure with perseverance!
* * * * * * *
We will be doing two interesting and fun projects this year!
These are the main elements found in each project:
Essential Question
Each project is driven by a question that drives our investigation and learning.
These questions are broad to allow for curiosity and exploration throughout the project.
Process
The process is the journey through the project. This is when students are asking questions, investigating, researching, solving problems, drafting and critiquing their work. Throughout the process, we tie in subject areas as they authentically fit to strengthen the learning of the project.
Product
The products are created by students to show and share their learning. Products can and will look different from project to project and can be created by individuals or groups!
Exhibition
Exhibition is an opportunity for students to share their learning with an audience at the end of each project. The audience can include parents, families, or community members. Students will communicate about the process and share their products. Exhibition is an important part of their learning and it is expected that all students participate to share their learning.
I can't wait to see what this year's First Graders will create and how they will
grow through our project work!
